Every 5 years, the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) requires all high mast light poles (HMLPs) on our nation’s highways to be inspected. Most conventional inspections today consist of a manual visual inspection of the pole from the ground. The inspector may use a pair of binoculars to view the higher portions of the light pole and luminaries.

The inspector will make notes if they view any defects and take pictures. Bringing ancillary inspections like high mast light poles into the 21st century would require a more thorough inspection. There are many Nondestructive Testing methods that can help accomplish this, but they are cumbersome, costly, and can only be used once a defect has been identified or by renting a boom truck to get to the correct height.

Luckily, Infraspect “Infraspect” has developed and patented a robotic high mast light pole inspection service that can thoroughly inspect the pole, seams, and luminaries with their patented robotic inspection unit.

Infraspect’s HMLP “Pole Crawler” is the first of its kind and can inspect the entire high mast light pole, including detailing the seams, luminaries, and pole surface, as well as highlighting any problem areas. Inspection results are preserved so that future inspections can compare deterioration progression over time. This means that problem areas can be reviewed to see if the damage has increased since the previous inspection, and action can be taken to ensure the integrity of the HMLP.

The HMLP inspection service is lightweight and easy to deploy worldwide. In the USA., Infraspect will provide the equipment and the services to the asset managers.

The inspection results are not only more thorough and less subjective than current inspection methods, but they can help asset managers win additional government bids and save time and money.

High Mast Light Pole Inspections Get A New Robot

The current method of inspecting high mast light poles is done by placing an inspector on the ground looking up hundreds of feet through a pair of binoculars.  A non-industry professional would hardly consider that an inspection. High mast light poles that illuminate our highway systems are aging along with the rest of our infrastructure, and it is important that these inspections are brought up to date to ensure the public’s safety.

Infraspect, Infraspect in Clearwater, Florida, has introduced a robotic high mast light pole inspection service.

High Mast Light Pole Inspection Services by Infraspect conduct a  complete inspection of the pole mast, seams, and luminaries.  Producing a 360-degree inspection that can locate anomalies prior to them becoming an issue. Pricing for these services is within the current DOT’s budget. Historical records are saved to compare the possible increases in High Mast Light Pole Inspection Services by Infraspect over time.

In addition, Infraspect can inspect the anchor bolts. Those anchor bolts go into the ground 3-4 feet and, over time, can be cracked and compromised due to heavy winds. It is important to test them for stress fractures or cracks so that defective ones can be replaced before they compromise the entire structure.
